SIR TO STAY ON FOR THREE YEARS
Yes, there's plenty of transfer gossip this Bank Holiday Morning and almost all of it is devoted to discussing Manchester United's transfer plans this summer, but surely the biggest news is the claim - delivered by almost all of the papers - that Sir Alex Ferguson intends to stay on at Old Trafford for at least another three years.

There are no quotes confirming as much - or at least there aren't as far as we can see - but the Fleet Street consensus is that Ferguson will be staying on until his 70s. An old boy indeed.


MODRIC BID COMING UP
Who didn't see this coming? Manchester United are expected to react to their Champions League final defeat with a bid for Luka Modric and the only question is whether Dimi Berbatov will be thrown in as a makeweight to tempt Spurs into doing business.

The Daily Mail says no, not yet: 'Ferguson will begin a summer of significant rebuilding at Old Trafford with a £20million bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.'

The Daily Mirror, on the other hand, reckons that 'Ferguson is understood to be considering using Berbatov in a player-plus-cash swap deal with the striker's former club, Tottenham, to land his top summer transfer target - creative midfielder Luka Modric.'

Either way, Tottenham are expected to come under intense pressure in the coming weeks to sell the Croatian and Berbatov's time looks to be up in the north-west.


YOUNG AND RODWELL ALSO COMING
So who and what else can we expect to/from Old Trafford? Well The Independent also believes that the United manager will not be hanging around:

'His rebuilding for next season is immediate, with United optimistic that they can wrap up the £14m signature of Ashley Young from Aston Villa by the end of June, fending off Liverpool. Everton's Jack Rodwell, who has been on Ferguson's wanted list for 12 months, is another target as he seeks to reinvigorate the midfield which Barcelona ran rings around.

'United's cash balance is approaching £150m and the club should have £60m to spend as it sees fit. Chief executive David Gill signalled 12 days ago that this would be a "busier than normal" summer. Goalkeeper David de Gea's expected £17m move from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford should also be concluded this week.'

Meanwhile, The Guardian claims that 'talks are at an advanced stage with Lens about an £8m move for the 18-year-old centre-half Raphaël Varane'.
