Now Villeneuve downplays Stefan GP rumours


Jacques Villeneuve has stopped short of confirming he's in talks with Stefan GP, the team he believes he could be the best newcomer if they make it into F1.

Stefan GP are determined to find a place on this year's grid and could be helped by the USF1 team, who are rumoured to be halting their F1 operations thereby freeing up a place on the grid.

Already Stefan GP has sent equipment to Bahrain, the venue for the first race of the Championship, while signing drivers is also on the agenda.

One driver reportedly in line for a race-seat is 1997 World Champion Villeneuve. The Canadian, though, wouldn't confirm the rumours other than to say it would be a "great opportunity."

"It's really difficult to keep track of what's happening with the new teams. Does Stefan GP even officially have a place on the grid in Formula One?" he told Auto Motor und Sport.

"If they get a place in Formula One then that would be a great opportunity.

"As the team allegedly has Bernie Ecclestone as one of their supporters, you can assume that they will make it. And that they'll take it seriously.

"With the Toyota equipment they could become one of the best new teams. It seems to me Mr. Stefanovich is very serious about this project."

Stefan GP has abandoned plans to test at Portimao in Portugal this week after failing to secure a supply of tyres to run on, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

The Serbian-based team has its new car, the Toyota-based Stefan 01, all ready to hit the track following a fire-up in Cologne last week, but its failure to obtain tyres from Formula 1's official tyre supplier Bridgestone has scuppered its bid to begin testing.

Bridgestone is only contracted to supply F1 tyres to those outfits that have an entry to the world championship, and the Japanese tyre manufacturer was unable to provide alternative GP2 rubber at such short notice.

With Stefan GP boss Zoran Stefanovic unwilling to run the car on tyres that are not suited to F1 performance, he has decided to call off this week's planned run.

"We cannot do the test at the moment and we are still trying to find a solution," Stefanovic told AUTOSPORT. "We have no tyres and will not test on tyres that are not suitable for the car to go testing at full speed.

"We now need to see what our options are, but we definitely need to do something to sort this situation out."

Stefan GP will almost certainly not be able to get hold of F1-spec tyres unless it gets an entry to the 2010 championship - something it has been pushing for for several months now.

Although there are now serious doubts about the future of Team US F1, which has asked to miss the first races of the season, Stefanovic has said that he is still no nearer understanding where his outfit stands.

"We are expecting that the situation will be clarified soon," he said. "Everybody knows that some teams are facing certain problems, and we are looking to clarify this situation."

Stefanovic also hoped to be able to confirm his team's drivers in the next week.

"We have already agreed terms with [Kazuki] Nakajima, and we expect to conclude a deal with [Jacques] Villeneuve. We think it is a good decision for us, and it makes sense for him."

Alonso: Ferrari more important than two titles


Fernando Alonso believes that driving for Ferrari means more emotionally than having already collected two World Championship titles for another team. The Spaniard enjoyed double success with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and aims for a third crowd this season after a three-year title drought.

After beating Kimi Räikkönen and Michael Schumacher to his respective titles, Alonso switched to McLaren for what turned out to be a turbulent season in 2007, beaten by rookie Lewis Hamilton. However, Fernando sees more importance in the fact that he is now representing the most historic team on the grid.


"My father always told me this would happen," Alonso told The Guardian. "He said, 'If you race for Ferrari, you can then retire. Your life is complete.'

"So after I won my two championships for Renault I said, 'I'm happy now - my career is complete' and he said, 'No, no, if you drive for Ferrari people will forget the championships. They will remember you as a Ferrari driver.'

"I said, 'Okay, Dad, we'll see.' Now I think he was right. Ferrari gives you a special feeling." With Räikkönen having been the last Champion for the Scuderia in 2007, the Maranello squad hopes to steal back the crown this year in order to avoid its longest losing streak since that between 1979 and 2000.
