On 10 November 2009, at age 32, Enke committed suicide when he was hit by a regional express train at a level crossing in Eilvese, Neustadt am Rübenberge.[25][26] Police confirmed a farewell letter was discovered but would not publicise its details.[26] Enke had suffered from severe depression since the death of his baby daughter, and had been receiving medical treatment for this for several years.[27] In the weeks before his death, he had been rested from training due to this.[28]

Many fans immediately flocked to Hannover 96's AWD-Arena home to lay flowers and light candles and sign the book of condolences upon news breaking.
