The mayor of a German town fired a Muslim intern on her first day of work because she refused to take off her headscarf, local media reported.

The 48-year-old woman had been hired for a project called 'Perspectives for Refugees' in the eastern town of Luckenwalde, Brandeburg, according to local paper Märkische Allgemeine. She was scheduled to work for six weeks.
However, the woman’s assignment with the town hall ended long before the scheduled date. In fact, she was fired on her very first day of work after refusing to remove a headscarf when asked, saying she did not want to do so in the presence of men.
Mayor Elisabeth Herzog-von der Heide wasted no time in firing the Palestinian woman, stating that wearing a headscarf violated the religious neutrality of town hall.
“The Islamic headscarf is a means of expressing a religious worldview,” Herzog-von der Heide told German media on Wednesday, as quoted by The Local.
She admitted that the town hall should have asked the woman about her position on removing headscarves prior to hiring her, and vowed that it would do so in the future.

The German chancellor’s “we can do it” approach to refugee crisis is “irresponsible” as it lures more migrants to Europe instead of capping their number, Austria’s defense minister said, calling on European leaders to promptly convene a “summit on deportation.”
“This is not a policy, if Europe stays here in agony and sticks its head in the sand,” Hans Peter Doskozil, who is also a member of the ruling Social Democratic Party, told Austria’s Krone newspaper in an interview published Thursday. Referring to what he believes is the lack of political will in Europe to offer viable solutions to the crisis instead of repeating past mistakes, Doskozil said Chancellor Angela Merkel committed one such mistake by establishing a “welcoming culture” for potential migrants.
By repeating the “we can do it” mantra, Merkel created a new “attraction factor” with her rhetoric boosting the refugee influx, he claimed.

“The ‘we can do it’ policy is irresponsible,” and counterproductive as it harms Europe as a whole, including Austria, Doskozil said.

“Austria is not a waiting room for Germany,” he said, alluding to the fact that many of the aspiring migrants are crossing to Austria in a hope of eventually settling in Germany, seemingly wooed by the impression they will be welcomed here.

Leaders of four EU countries lashed out at Germany for insisting on migrant quotas as the German chancellor paid a visit to Poland, a staunch opponent of Berlin’s strategy on refugees.
On Friday, Chancellor Angela Merkel, who arrived in Warsaw for official talks with her counterparts from Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary, faced discontent over the migrant quotas backed by Berlin.
During the joint press conference, Merkel advocated unity and said that the quotas should remain the ground for dialogue.
"The Czech Republic cannot agree to any system, based on the mandatory quota for the compulsory distribution of refugees," Bohuslav Sobotka, the Czech Prime Minister, countered.
The country alongside Poland, Slovakia and Hungary forms a so-called “Visegrad group” that staunchly opposes any regulations on re-distribution of migrants across the EU.
During the meeting Sobotko and the Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban also proposed increased European cooperation on security issues.
“The EU has lost its adaptability, and we have no right answer to migration and terrorism," Orban said.

German Military Intelligence (MAD) is looking into nearly 300 cases of potential extremists, including Islamist infiltrators in its ranks, and is mulling tougher screening for recruits because of the situation, Die Welt reports, citing military sources.
“Currently the MAD is checking a three-digit number of suspected extremists in the armed forces: 268 right-wing extremists, 64 Islamists and six left-wing extremists,” Die Welt reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed military official.
According to the outlet, the MAD has tip-offs about plans to enroll so-called “short-term servicemen” into the German army (Bundeswehr) for them to get proper military training.

The intelligence agency is also reported as saying that so-called “green-on-blue,” or insider, attacks, would be possible in that case.
"Risks by such perpetrators for the military compounds inside and outside the country cannot be excluded in that regard.”
In a bid to counter potential dangers, the Bundeswehr plans to introduce security checks for new recruits via the MAD. According to the plan, extremists, terrorists and criminals should in this way be denied any chance to join the ranks of the army.

Unknown vandals have bricked up a door leading to a mosque in a small town in northeastern Germany, also putting up stickers bearing racist messages on the makeshift wall.
Police in the small town of Parchim in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have launched an investigation after a door to a local mosque, currently under construction, was found blocked with a one meter high brick wall last week, according to a police report.

Several flyers bearing anti-Islamic messages had been posed on the wall. Among them were “you call yourself believers, we call you invaders,” and “the mosques are our barracks, the minarets our bayonets, the believers our soldiers,” which is allegedly a quote from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A criminal probe has been launched on two counts, including vandalism and the incitement of hatred, German broadcaster NDR reported.
