Ne zna se stvarni autor, mada neki izvori pominju da su autori teksta Georgia Turner i Bert Martin iz Kentakija. Najstariji zvučni zapis ove pjesme je iz 1934. godine, a izveli su je Clarence "Tom" Ashley och Gwen Foster. Poznata je i verzija koju je 1941. uradio Woody Guthrie.
